Program Availability
The Gerontology Certificate program is open to currently enrolled students who wish to increase their employability. The program is especially suited for students in the Department of Applied Clinical and Educational Sciences, psychology students, and students interested in the psychology of aging. Students should consult with their advisors before enrolling in courses to ensure suitability and to plan their program of study.

Program Highlights
In the Gerontology Certificate program, you will learn the principles of gerontology – the study of aging, with a focus on older adults. The program is designed for professionals or students in any field who wish to interact with older adults in a professional, community, or personal capacity. The program’s curriculum provides knowledge, experiential learning, and reflection on human behavior in the psychology of aging.
Courses
The Gerontology Certificate program consists of nine credits covering three courses focused on general psychology and understanding human behavior; health and aging; and death, dying, and the quality of life. The curriculum highlights social, cultural, ethical, personal, and spiritual aspects of the aging of older adults.
Transfer Credit
Indiana State University accepts credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities within the United States, and from selected schools located outside the United States. Credit also may be granted for military training and experience. Previously earned college credit can be applied toward completion of the program per Indiana State's transfer guidelines.

Graduating with a certificate in gerontology prepares you for advanced roles in the field of aging, including clinician, administrator, educator, researcher, and advocate. Graduates typically are employed in health services at hospitals, nursing homes, health insurance companies, consulting firms, health marketing, social service agencies, private practices, mental health clinics, hospice centers, and nonprofit agencies. You will also be prepared for a variety of graduate programs, including those in social work, psychology, and mental health.
